About the Irish Setter

The Irish Setter, with its luxurious red coat and friendly disposition, is a breed that captures the hearts of families and dog lovers alike. Originating from Ireland, these dogs were initially bred for hunting and retrieving game, combining agility and charm in one elegant package. Their affectionate nature makes them particularly suitable for families, especially those with young children, as they thrive on companionship and enjoy being part of all family activities.

These medium-sized dogs are known for their energetic personalities and require regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. While they are not the best fit for apartment living due to their need for space to roam and play, they are great companions for active families or individuals who enjoy spending time outdoors. Regular walks, playtime, and engaging activities will help burn off their enthusiasm and keep them mentally stimulated.

In terms of grooming, Irish Setters need weekly brushing to maintain their beautiful coat and to manage shedding, which can be moderate. With a good balance of intelligence and a bit of independent spirit, they can be trained effectively, although consistent and positive reinforcement methods work best. Their barking tendency is moderate, which means they can alert you to visitors without being overly vocal. If you are searching for a loving, energetic canine companion, consider welcoming an Irish Setter into your home. Visit Petland Merrillville, IN, to meet these playful and devoted dogs in person.

Living with a Irish Setter

Breed History

The Irish setter is the youngest of the three AKC setter breeds and is believed to have descended from the English Setter. Irish hunters wanted and needed a fast-working dog with a strong nose. This breed’s bright red color was easy to spot while in the outdoors. The Irish Setter’s ability to work with his human handler is second to none.

Personality

This breed is known for having a very focused and eager to please personality. They have very steady demeanors and tend to get along well with other pets in the household. They are not aggressive dogs but are active and do well with daily outdoor activity time. This breed does make a very good family pet.

Appearance

Irish Setters should be provided with thorough and daily brushings. A weekly to bi-weekly bath will help to keep their coats clean and shiny. Being that this breed does enjoy outdoor time, extra time should be invested in making sure they are kept clean and well-maintained. This will not only allow this dog to look his best but feel his best.

Care

The Irish Setter is energetic and does enjoy outdoor playtime with family. Keeping this breed fueled with a balance of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, is important. Irish Setter owners recommend feeding this breed two meals each day, spaced about twelve hours apart. This will help to ensure the dog is provided with the proper nutrients he needs. It is also suggested that his teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week. Failing to keep his teeth clean can contribute to health issues. Although properly cleaning his teeth will take some practice to get good at, in time, this will become easier for you and your pup.

Breed Size

  • The Irish Setter stands between twenty-five and twenty-seven inches tall upon maturity.
  • This breed weighs sixty and seventy pounds.
  • The average life expectancy for this breed is between twelve and fourteen years.

This Petland was super clean and well taken care of! It wasn’t too busy so we were able to see a dog. The workers there were super attentive and kept checking in on us and helped us pick the right puppy to see. They had a few hamsters, ferrets, and Guinea pigs. This location does not have reptiles or fish. I highly recommend coming here for all your dog needs!

This review is for Destiny M. She is next level fantastic. Her demeanor, patience, knowledge was unbelievable. Their prices for dogs seem high, but do your research and you will find them to be competitive. Destiny makes the entire experience worth it. Loved her!
